Kelly graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2005 and after eighteen months in small animal general practice, completed a rotating internship at the Royal Veterinary College and a three-year ECVS approved residency programme in the Small Animal Surgery at the University of Bristol. Kelly joined the Animal Health Trust in 2011, embarking on a PhD which investigates the genetics of metastasis in canine cancer. She joined the University of Edinburgh in September 2019 as senior lecturer in small animal surgery. She is a member of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) and the Association of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgeons (AVSTS).
